A completely distinct tale of the meeting and marriage of John Stirling (later 5th Bart.) and 'Gloriana' Folsom, at Stratford, can be found in Samuel Orcutt, A history of the old town of Stratford and the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, 2 vols. (New Haven, 1886), 1:449. It states clearly that they were married at Stratford, 10 March 1771. And there's none of the illness-on-a-tropical-island story found in the Folsom genealogy. Hmmm. NLT

The published sources on Stirling don't include the date of marriage of Sir John, 5th Bart., and the wife he met on his sojourn in Connecticut. But google shows us the marriage took place in Glasgow, 28 January 1774. See "Extracts from St. Andrew's (Episcopal) Registers, Glasgow," The Scottish Antiquary 10 (1896), 21.

This means that of their 17 children, the first two (both girls) were born before their parents were married--unless they were married twice. --NLT
