Here is a condensed version of the 'Agincourt Roll' printed
by Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas. This version, retyped by me from the text printed
by Nicolas, retains the original grouping of retinues found in Nicolas, but
only lists the names of the retinue leaders, and any
*knights* or *esquires* listed among the retinues.
There is one
other version of Nicolas' Agincourt participant list on the net. That website
presents the text of Nicolas' alphabetical index to the full version of this
current document (in pp. 391-400 of his book cited below). The index has more
names (i.e., it includes the people who are not knights), but it does not distinguish
the knights or esquires from the others, nor does it preserve any retinue groupings.
I suspect that it is easier to make positive IDs of the knights, so I have simply
extracted the knights' and esquires' names for this list. With the non-knights,
it would be harder to argue that the person on the list is the same as any given
individual of that name. If there is interest, I may arrange to put the whole
list on line with further information.
Source: Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas, History of the Battle
of Agincourt and of the expedition of Henry the Fifth into France in 1415, to
which is added the roll of the men at arms in the English army. 2d ed.
London, 1832. Pp. 333-363.
Nicolas collated this roll from three manuscripts:
British Library, Harleian MS 782 College of Arms, MS M1 Ashmolean Museum [since 1860 in Bodleian Library], MS Ashmole
825
The Ashmolean copy is in the hand of Robert Glover, Somerset Herald, 1571-1588.
In the MS Glover states that he copied the list from a longer original which
had contained the names of archers as well as the 900-odd 'lances' (knights
and men-at-arms) named.
In the version that follows, the first name in each group is the leader of a
retinue. The names that follow are the knights (if any) in that person's retinue,
and a tally of the other named people. I have omitted the tallies for the (unnamed)
archers that appear in some, but not all, retinues.
"The names of the dukes, erles, barons, knights, esquires, serviteurs, and
others that were withe the excellent prince King Henry the Fifte at the Battell
of Agincourt..."
