The identity of the York River planter appears to be supported by an entry in a tabular pedigree in Powerscourt's Muniments, though the source of the notation from which the pedigree is drawn is unknown. The sons assigned by Herndon to the York River planter cannot be proven to be his. Recent (2002) DNA testing confirms that agnate descendants of three of the putative sons of the York River planter have some relation to these English Wingfields, though the evidence is not conclusive to prove, or even necessarily to support, the pedigree as given in Powerscourt and here.See a discussion of the DNA testing at the Wingfield Family Society webpage, and a hard-nosed critical essay by descendant Abigail Ann Young of Toronto, "The Real 'Thomas Wingfield of York River' Dilemma," dated October 2002.
